I like to use the story about gossip. A fable, perhaps, but the story goes that St. Philip Neri gave a woman a penance to shake all the feathers from her pillow at the top of the mountain. When she returned to confession, he told her now to go and pick them all up. Now of course, that was impossible. Her sin was gossip. I use that story to explain why we tell our sins to a priest and not just to God. The priest stands in for the “body of Christ” all whom our sins have hurt through a domino effect that we can’t ask forgiveness from. Telling our sins to the priest is our way of apologizing to those we don’t even know have been hurt by our sins.

I used this technique with my niece over the weekend. She has not really been to church since married. (Christmas and Easter). She has been trying for 9 years to get pregnant. She told me over the weekend that she was in fact pregnant, and that my prayers for her “worked.” (I had prayed with her for healing a year ago and she knows she is remembered in my daily Rosary.) Well, we talked a little and it came around to “one good reason”…I didn’t have to use those words. I shared my personal reversion story with her, and in essence that if she believed God answered our prayers, that she owed it to God to give Him the gratitude and worship He deserved. My “one good reason” of course are the sacraments of the church, especially Holy Eucharist, as she will soon be looking for Baptism for her child. I will continue the conversation with her (baby steps)…we have until March when her baby is born. 🙂 I don’t get to see her often, but she and her husband both need evangelization and catechism. Unfortunately, she is in the group of children who were merely “sacramentalized.” I hope she will be open to meeting with me on a regular basis.

I’m curious about your statement that you are a “hospital chaplain.” Are you Catholic? Just curious.

It’s great that you’re practicing on other people. I think it would be good to mention a little more of the Catholic teaching, as in Adam & Eve’s disobedience (sin) and Jesus calls us to repent and believe in the Gospel, and also that He founded the Catholic Church to help us stay on the path of being His follower. We want our end result to be a conversion to Jesus AND the Catholic Church. I am terrible at quoting Scripture (I get dyslexic with chapters and numbers) but you can at least mention general concepts based on Scripture versus. Yes, we don’t want to be academic, but we do want the “power” of the words we get from Scripture. You are in my prayers!!

So, thank you Bob for stretching my brain during our “Street Ready” interview call. However, this old brain does forget things. Folks, I made what could have been a fatal error when I quoted Mark 16:17-18 & Matt 10:8 in response to Bob’s role-play question of “why are you so confident in your beliefs?” Well, they quizzed me on whether I really believed WE could pray for someone to be raised from the dead. Here’s the miracle story I was too flustered to share. Folks, we BELIEVE every word in Scripture!! Matt 10:8 “Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.” Mark 16:17-18 These signs will accompany THOSE WHO BELIEVE: in My name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages.They will pick up serpents [with their hands], and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Pastor Jim Baker of Zion Church in Powell, Ohio also spoke of witnessing someone raised from the dead, but I can’t find the testimony. NOW, go out and pray with people on the street and EXPECT signs & wonders! Love to all. Praise Jesus!

I started reading the suggested book in the course, pdf was provided: Soul of the Apostolate. It’s really good, helps keep our purpose for our activities on track. All for the glory of God. I also love listening to praise music. Keeps me uplifted and remaining with God all day.

That is a beautiful testimony. Thank you for your service. I am sorry your parents weren’t there for you. As I told my son, humans are flawed, but God our Father, and Mary our Mother, will never let us down. Adding you to my Rosary today! and…all you Catholic brothers and sisters are your friends also! It’s my son, and he was lamenting that his father (my ex husband) is like a stranger to him. My ex is remarried outside the church and lack of communication was instrumental in the divorce. Apparently, he doesn’t keep in touch with his children either. My son visited him on FathersDay/Birthday and was in tears at how distant they are. Got us talking about “Good Fathers” and how God is one. He doesn’t believe in God exactly…so hopefully that was a good analogy and a reminder that everything “of this world” will disappoint.

Excellent! We must always be aware of giving scandal. I’d just stay away from it, period! There are several Catholic churches around here who have yoga classes. I am constantly emailing them fraternal correction. And we wonder why Catholics are confused, lukewarm and apostate!
