ParticipantI’ll give 3 pieces of advice, here.
1. Pray to the Lord, to give you a share in the gift of discernment of spirits
2. Have trust that the Lord is guiding you in your life and then act with that trust in mind. You don’t always have to know for certain whether a particular prompting is from the Lord or you. If it’s not clearly a bad prompting, then you could just try it out. See if good fruits come from it. Sometimes discernment comes after acting.
3. Buy and read Fr. Gallagher’s “The Discernment of Spirits: An Ignatian Guide for Everyday Living.” https://www.amazon.com/Discernment-Spirits-Ignatian-Everyday-Living/dp/0824522915/

This is why we produced this course on the role of the Holy Spirit — that all of our evangelists might be convinced to their core of their need for the Spirit in all their apostolic activities.

Notice that the activity involves praying for them daily going forward (not forever, necessarily, but for a while). The ways to show them kindness refers particularly to things you can do for them in their presence, ways to show them kindness or love.

I appreciate your inclusion of the listen and befriend aspect of evangelization method. That is so important. In situation 1, this will help her feel more heard and loved. In situation 2, I think it could open up the conversation when one might be very difficult.
