What a beautiful story of grace.
I’d like to hear more about what happened afterward.

For my part, I was raised by a non-practicing Catholic mother, and a father with no religious background at all. I had lots of fear and anxiety for all kinds of reasons. When I was a teenager, my mother began practicing again and brought it to the rest of us as well.

The first major step for me, as I remember it, was reading the Bible for the first time. I tried to read through the whole thing, and mostly succeeded. I didn’t understand a lot but some things, which I did understand, were liberating to me. Romans chapter 8 sticks out to me particularly in my memory, and it read like the words of God, for me. And I responded to those words with prayer. I also discovered a love for theology and apologetics around that time as well, as I strove to understand the Scriptures more.
I am deeply grateful for the gifts of those days, which put me on the path of salvation.

You could focus on the ways that your eucharistic encounter changed your life. What do you have now as an intentional follower of Jesus, who encountered him alive, that you didn’t have before? Or what do you have more of now that you had less of before? How has Jesus made your life better?

I think that “indifferentism” might be over people’s heads too. But definitely try to make the same or similar point.

One good way to approach it might be to explain that you don’t want to contradict the other person, but its important to say that that idea (expressed by your wife’s sister) is not the teaching of Jesus and the Bible.

(I think that a lot of people with these indifferentist views haven’t thought it out very thoroughly, and still have respect for Jesus and the Bible — though not all of them do)

Then you might say that Jesus came into the world that all mankind could be saved through living lives of faith in Him. Becoming His disciples, living in a relationship with Him, following Him.

If she has questions, you can answer them. But sticking to a humble, but direct proclamation of the necessity of Christ, and of the Church.
