About our Instructors

Dr. Mary Healy

Dr. Mary Healy is professor of Sacred Scripture at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit and an international speaker on topics related to Scripture, evangelization, healing, and the spiritual life. She is a general editor of the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture and author of two of its volumes, The Gospel of Mark and Hebrews. Her other books include Men and Women Are from Eden: A Study Guide to John Paul II’s Theology of the Body and Healing: Bringing the Gift of God’s Mercy to the World. Dr. Healy serves the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian unity as a member of the Pentecostal-Catholic International Dialogue. She is one of the first three women ever to serve on the Pontifical Biblical Commission, and is a consultor to the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. She served as an advisor for our book Ordinary Christians, Extraordinary Signs, and an expert interviewed for our online book study, “Healing in Evangelization.” She is the instructor for our course “Evangelization: The Basics.”


Peter Herbeck

Peter Herbeck is the Executive Vice President and Director of Missions for Renewal Ministries. For more than thirty years, he has been actively involved in evangelization and Catholic renewal throughout the US, Canada, Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe. Peter is the co-host of the weekly television show, The Choices We Face. He hosts the daily radio show Fire on the Earth. He is a frequent conference speaker. He co-authored his most recent book, Lessons From the School of Love: Cultivating a Christ-Centered Marriage, with his wife Debbie. He has also authored When the Spirit Comes in Power, When the Spirit Speaks, and numerous booklets, and is a frequent contributor to Renewal Ministries’ popular YouTube channel. Peter and his wife, Debbie, have four children and twelve grandchildren, and reside in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is the instructor for our course “Introduction to the Kerygma.” He is an expert interviewed for our online book study, “Healing in Evangelization.”


Joe Philip

Joseph Philip serves as the Associate Director of Bridge Housing at the Pope Francis Center, where he integrates his extensive background in theology and ministry with his professional experience in educational and organizational leadership. With a Bachelors of Science in Education and a Master of Arts in Theology and Christian Ministry, Joe has dedicated his career to teaching, training, and empowering others through the transformative power of supernatural faith and service. He is passionate about creating and sustaining environments that help others achieve their full potential that flows from their dignity and reveals their destiny.

In his professional journey, Joseph has demonstrated exceptional skills in coordinating multi-campus programming, curriculum development, and team management, having served as the Director of the School of Evangelization with St. Paul Evangelization Institute and Senior Director at Encounter School of Ministry. His current role as Associate Director of Bridge Housing at the Pope Francis Center leverages his ability to integrate ministry with strategic program management in creating whole-person, trauma-informed care environments that address the multifaceted challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness. His work at the Bridge Housing Campus focuses on providing not just permanent shelter, but comprehensive support that fosters long-term stability, hope, and personal growth for each resident.

Joe is husband to Tara, father to 3 children, a disciple of Jesus, and without fail, an avid Lord of the Rings fan. He is the instructor for our course “Introduction to Christian Testimony.”


Patrick Brennan

Patrick Brennan is originally from East Lansing, Michigan. In 2012, two years after graduating from law school, he had a life changing encounter with the Holy Spirit that launched him into the adventure of knowing God and following Jesus with his whole heart. Patrick’s passion is to share the Gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit wherever he goes. Patrick spent three years as a seminarian with the Diocese of Lansing and one year as a member of St. Paul Society of Evangelists. He is now teaching at a Catholic school in Lansing. He is the instructor for our course, “Basic Evangelization Strategies.”


Beth Schuele

Beth has been a part of St. Paul Street Evangelization since 2014 starting as a volunteer evangelist then becoming a team leader and senior missionary. She has a MA in Pastoral Studies with an emphasis in the New Evangelization from Sacred Heart Major Seminary. Beth is a cradle Catholic whose faith was stirred by the Holy Spirit as her three children were growing up. This brought on a flurry of activity in various Catholic ministries including parish life, pro-life work, campus ministry, and teaching high school theology. Beth has been interviewed on EWTN Television along with Ave Maria and Relevant Radio. She currently resides in Michigan with her husband Tim. She is the instructor for our course, “Introduction to the Spiritual Life of the Evangelist,” and for lessons of various other courses, most notably, the “Team Leader Training.”


Pete Burak

Pete Burak is the vice president of Renewal Ministries, a ministry dedicated to Catholic renewal and evangelization around the world. He is a graduate of Franciscan University of Steubenville and has a master’s degree in theology from Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, Michigan. Pete is a frequent speaker on discipleship and evangelization and the codirector of Pine Hills Boys’ Camp. He is a monthly columnist for Faith Magazine and the host of two podcasts: Spirit-filled Leadership and The Hour. Pete and his wife, Cait, have five children. He is the instructor for our course, “Introduction to a New Pentecost.”


Mark Hornbacher

Growing up nominally Catholic, Mark began reading and studying the Scriptures as a teenager. This journey into a more mature faith led him to theology studies, discernment of religious life, and diocesan seminary, before he recognized a lay calling in service to the Church’s mission of evangelization. As Vice President of Programs and Director of Theology at St. Paul Street Evangelization, Mark helps develop and implement many of the apostolate’s initiatives, including new course materials and other publications. He resides in Sterling Heights, MI with his wife Gayle, and their three sons. He is an instructor for our courses, “Introduction to One Good Reason, “The Economy of Salvation and the Role of the Church,” and for lessons of various other courses.


Brian Lee

Brian was born and raised in Atlanta, GA. He earned a degree in Business Management before serving as a FOCUS missionary on the campus of Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis. After two years with FOCUS he spent three years in the seminary where he learned the art of prayer and discernment as well as studied philosophy and theology. Before coming on with SPSE Brian served as the Director of Mission and Discipleship at a major parish in downtown Indianapolis. He completed his Masters in Theology at the Augustine Institute and is excited to share his formation and further the mission of the New Evangelization with SPSE. He and his wife Kristen have two boys and one girl, and reside in Atlanta, GA. He is an instructor for our course, “Introduction to One Good Reason,” and for lessons of various other courses, most notably, the “Team Leader Training.”


Adam Janke

Adam oversees the development of programs and resources for St. Paul Street Evangelization including the Urban Missionary Program, Regional Missionary Program, Leadership Training Institute, and the School of Evangelization. Adam brings the experience the institute has gained through more than 300 street teams in the form of talks and workshops on evangelization, healing, and hospitality. After converting to Catholicism from biblical fundamentalism in 2005, Adam obtained a BA in Theology and Catechetics and an MA in Theology in Christian Ministry from Franciscan University. Adam has been featured on EWTN Television and Radio, Catholic Answers Live, the Radio Maria Network, the National Catholic Register, as well as in several other Catholic news publications. He resides in Michigan with his wife and eight children. He is an instructor for lessons of various courses, most notably for bonus lessons from the book study “Healing in Evangelization,” and for our “Team Leader Training.”


Bob Wilson

Bob Wilson is a life long Metro Detroiter. He grew up Catholic but didn’t start living his faith until 2007. Struggles with panic and anxiety led him to seek the peace that only Jesus can give. He’s been evangelizing ever since. He first started evangelizing with St Paul Street Evangelization in 2012. He’s evangelized at parish festivals, college campuses, parks, and downtown areas. He became the Director for SPSE in 2019. Before that Bob worked for UPS for over 22 years. He is the instructor for our courses, “One Good Reason for Protestants,” “10 Ways to be a Better Evangelist,” and for lessons of various other courses, including most notably our “Team Leader Training.”


Pat Flynn

Pat Flynn is a writer and philosopher living in Wisconsin with his wife, Christine, and five children. He is the author of The Best Argument for God, How to Be Better at (Almost) Everything, Strong ON! (Dec 2024), and Paleo Workouts for Dummies. He contributes apologetics material regularly for Catholic websites such as Catholic Answers and Word on Fire, and hosts two podcasts: The Pat Flynn Show and Philosophy for the People. His is the instructor for our course, “One Good Reason for Atheists.”


Carlos Bersabe

Carlos Bersabe is a Catholic “re-vert,” husband, father, and currently serves in the United States Air Force. He holds a graduate degree from Holy Apostles in Catholic Moral Theology. ​When not engaged in overtly faith-filled activities, Carlos and his family enjoy God’s creation through hunting, fishing, camping, and anything outdoors. He is the instructor for our course, “One Good Reason for Non-Christian Believers.”


Dr. John Bergsma

Dr. John Bergsma is Vice President for Biblical Theology and Mission Effectiveness at the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology and Professor of Theology at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, where he has taught Scripture since 2004. He holds the B.A., M.Div. and Th.M. degrees from Calvin College and Seminary (now Calvin University) and a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from the University of Notre Dame (Indiana).

A former Protestant pastor, Dr. Bergsma has authored numerous books on Scripture and the Catholic faith, including Jesus and the Jubilee: The Biblical Roots of the Year of God’s Favor and The Word of the Lord: Reflections on the Sunday Mass Readings series. He has also published over two dozen peer-reviewed or invited essays and articles in various scholarly journals, festschrifts, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and essay collections. Dr. Bergsma speaks regularly for parish missions, diocesan conferences, clergy convocations, and other events nationally and internationally. He and his wife Dawn reside with their eight children in Steubenville, Ohio. Dr. Bergsma is the instructor for our courses, “Old Testament Covenants,” and “Salvation in Jesus Christ.”


Steve Ray

Steve Ray is a convert to the Catholic Church and the author of three best-selling Ignatius Press books (Crossing the Tiber, Upon this Rock, and St. John’s Gospel). He speaks at conferences around the world. He is a regular guest on The Journey Home and has appeared on many other radio and TV programs, including Fox News. He is writer, producer and host of the 10-part video/DVD series The Footprints of God: the Story of Salvation from Abraham to Augustine filmed entirely on location in the Holy Land and surrounding countries. Steve and his wife Janet and are certified guides to the Holy Land and lead pilgrimages throughout the Middle East and Rome. He and Janet live in Michigan. They have four children and ten grandchildren. His is the instructor for our courses, “7 Rules for Relating to Non-Catholic Family and Friends,” and “The Life of St. Paul.”


Marcus Peter

Dr. Marcus Peter went from militant atheist to passionate preacher after encountering Christ in 2008. Initially preaching against Catholicism, his prayerful study of Scripture, theology, philosophy, and the Church Fathers—alongside Mary’s intercession—led him back to the Catholic Church in 2010.

Now a renowned Catholic speaker, biblical theologian, and author, Marcus has delivered over 10,000 dynamic talks worldwide. He hosts Ave Maria Radio’s international programs Ave Maria in the Afternoon and Unveiling the Covenants, regularly appearing on EWTN.

Dr. Peter earned his doctorate in biblical studies from Pontifex University and is Director of Theology at Ave Maria Radio and the Credo Institute. He lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with his wife Stephanie and their children. He is the instructor for our course, “The Call to Salvation.”


Fr. Patrick Gonyeau

Fr. Patrick Gonyeau is a priest on fire with the love of God from the Archdiocese of Detroit who currently lives and serves with the U.S. Province of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood in Ohio. He also serves as an instructor and healing evangelist with Encounter Ministries. Once an agnostic, alcoholic, and suicidal young man, Fr. Patrick experienced a profound encounter with Jesus that led to a life-changing conversion and a call to the priesthood. He was ordained on May 18, 2013 and is passionate about teaching, equipping and activating disciples to do the works of Jesus. (Jn 14:12) He loves serving as a Catholic Priest and considers celebrating the sacraments and serving in pastoral ministry and evangelization as some of the greatest graces in his life. His favorite saint is Mother Mary, he’s a big Michigan State Basketball fan, loves being outside and loves loves loves worshipping God. He is the instructor for our course, “The Call to Evangelize.” He is also an expert interviewed for our online book study, “Healing in Evangelization.”


Fr. Matthew MacDonald

Fr. Matthew MacDonald is a priest of the Archdiocese of New York and was ordained by His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan in May 2014. He originally grew up in Lynbrook, New York on Long Island and is the eldest of three children. He received his Masters in Divinity (MDiv) and Masters of Arts (MA) in Theology from Saint Joseph’s Seminary (Dunwoodie) in Yonkers, New York. He currently serves as Parochial Vicar at Saint Mary’s Church in Washingtonville, New York. He is also pursuing certification in spiritual direction from the Institute of Priestly Formation.

Fr. MacDonald has written articles for Catholic World Report, Crisis Magazine, and SpiritualDirection.com on various topics dealing with theology, spirituality, and current events effecting the church and the world. He has taught for the Avila Institute School of Spiritual Formation and Saint Paul’s Evangelization Institute. He has also written a new Forward to the second edition of Visions and Revelations in the Spiritual Life, by Fr. Gabriel of Saint Mary Magdalen as part of the Sophia Institute Press Spiritual Direction Book Series which will be released in July 2022.

His greatest loves are Our Lord, Our Lady, the Priesthood, and serving the Church and working for the salvation of souls. Fr. MacDonald seeks to help people grow in the love of Our Lord through helping them live out the teachings of the Gospel on prayer and the Interior Life. When he is not busy, he enjoys traveling, history, prayer, reading, writing, running, and spending time with his family and friends. He is the instructor for our course, “Imitating God in the Work of Evangelization.”


Lexa Davis

Lexa Davis graduated from the University of Central Florida with a B.A. in Film and a Creative Writing minor. With experience working on over 150 short productions, Lexa traveled north in 2021 to work as Video Production Specialist for St. Paul’s School of Evangelization. She partners with the team on various projects and directs the production process from start to finish. Lexa was born in Ohio and raised in a strong Catholic family. She grew tremendously in her faith and relationship with God through her involvement in UCF’s campus ministry, Saint Paul’s Outreach, RCIA mentorship, and live-streaming work for the Brotherhood of Hope. These experiences set her heart on fire for mission, personal growth, and relational evangelization. She is an instructor for our course, “Proclaiming Salvation,” the main presenter for our book study, “Healing in Evangelization,” and instructor for lessons of various other courses.


John Nguyen

John Nguyen was raised Catholic in California but it was in college that he experienced a life-changing encounter with God that set him on a quest for answers. This search for truth led him to Jesus and back to the Catholic Church. He became very active in young adult ministry, received Confirmation, then left college to enter religious life as a Franciscan Friar of the Immaculate, where he happened to first meet Steve Dawson. Seven years later, John felt called to pursue a different vocation and followed Steve’s evangelization ministry to Michigan. He currently volunteers for St. Paul Street Evangelization as he discerns his vocation and completes his degree in philosophy at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit. He is an instructor for bonus lessons from the book study “Healing in Evangelization.”
