Because of the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ, we have access to the life and power of God, the Holy Spirit. On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit first came upon the Church, and equipped her for the work of evangelization. Because of this, Pentecost tells us a lot about that work. Specifically, it tells us the method, the message, and the power-source of evangelization. The method is prayerful preparation, bold proclamation, and openness to miraculous signs. The message above all is the kerygma. The power-source is the Holy Spirit. Because we need the power of the Holy Spirit to evangelize, we need a “new Pentecost” — that the flame of the Spirit be renewed within us. As we are renewed in the Spirit, we need to listen to and follow His promptings by immersing ourselves in Sacred Scripture and in Christian community, and testing the inspirations we receive. Also, in a special way we ought to consider the Blessed Virgin Mary our “arm-in-arm” partner in our work of evangelization, seeking her intercession continually. For she, before all other disciples of Jesus, is “overshadowed” by the Holy Spirit.
