I am enjoying the course. It is helping me to learn ways to talk with the people we encounter when we go out. I think giving One Good Reason, helps to keep an encounter from becoming confrontational. I would not accept someone who kept saying to me, “You should do…..” This method let’s you share without getting into judging or acting like you are the expert.

On Thursdays I visit a 99-year-old friend to pray the rosary with her. I had not planned on using the One Good Reason; she is a person with a strong Catholic faith. After praying the rosary, if she is not too tire, we usually chat, frequently talking of Jesus or the faith. As we talked about family members who left the faith or people who do not believe, I shared with her that one of the reasons I believe in God is because ice cubes float. I explained that almost all liquids when they freeze, freeze from the bottom up. Water is the only common substance that freezes from the top down. We see it so often that it seems ordinary, but it is unique. If water froze from the bottom up, the ordinary way, there would be no life in our lakes. Water expanding and freezing from the top down, caused by hydrogen bonding, had to be the result of great intelligence, God.
This reminded me of an evangelization encounter I had the previous summer that I shared with her. Another evangelist and I encountered a woman, who asked us, “Why do you believe the bible is the inspired word of God, it was just written by a bunch of men?” My partner, a man tried giving her various reasons, none of which she would accept. I asked her if I could explain to her why I believe the bible is the inspired word of God. When she said yes, I told her it was because when I read the bible I can feel God speaking to my heart. She accepted my answer! I am not sure if it was because I was a woman or that she liked my answer.
