Fátima and Evangelization Lesson 8 – Study Questions

  1. After the fall of Communism, Pope St. John Paul II warned in his 1991 Encyclical letter Centesimus Annus that “the old forms of totalitarianism and authoritarianism are not yet completely vanquished” and noted that “there is a risk that they will regain their strength” (29a). There are still countries in the world that are Communist (China and Cuba, for example) and there are many sympathizers for it, especially through “Cultural Marxism.” Is It possible that we are seeing John Paul’s warning coming to fruition in our present day? Why or why not?
  2. At Fátima, Our Lady warned us about dangers to the Faith that would arise if Russia was not consecrated to her Immaculate Heart. Chief among these dangers was atheism. What are some of the ways that people can engage in atheism?
  3. What are the four influences that Fátima has upon evangelization? Feel free to add your own observation, if you have one.
  4. As evangelists, it is important to know the facts so as to be as best prepared to give an answer for the hope that is in us (1 Peter 3:15). What, then, is the most impressive sign during the miracle of October 13, 1917: the sun “dancing” in the sky or the dry clothes and ground? (This question requires some thought. Do not answer hastily; pay close attention to footnote 49)
  5. How is Sr. Lúcia a model for evangelists today? Be sure to include the reasons we have discussed here, but feel free to add an observation or two of your own. If you offer your own observation, make sure it is grounded in historical or biographical facts.
