Man, created in the image and likeness of God, was destined to become like God through deification. Unfortunately, man lost the divine life of grace through Original Sin. As a result of this fall, sin, death and the devil entered into the world making man’s journey through this life more difficult. God, however, desired to save man from sin and put him on a path of salvation. This path to salvation is marked by the Moral Law, known to man through his reason (Natural Law) and Revelation (Divine Law). The Moral Law, however, is well-characterized as “family rules” whereby God informs and protects man from sin by enlightening his conscience. The Moral Law finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ who establishes the New Law of Grace that is His Gospel. By it, He “raises the bar,” calls all men to Faith in Him, and communicates His love and grace to help man exercise his freedom to live a new life of holiness. This new life begins at Holy Baptism wherein the divine life of God is restored to man, making him free to respond to God’s love and calling. The Christian, then, is called to be like God and to draw ever closer to Him in love throughout this earthly journey. At the end of that journey, the Christian experiences the particular judgment by Christ, and goes to heaven or hell depending upon whether or not he is conformed to Christ. At the end of human history, there will be the general judgment wherein Christ shall return and the fate of all men will be fully manifest to all.
