The Lord Jesus calls all of His disciples to evangelize, and that call is intimately bound to each person’s state in life. Jesus established both the common priesthood of the faithful and the ministerial priesthood; the work of the Holy Spirit runs through them both, clothing each with power from on high, making them cooperators of the truth. The mission of the twelve Apostles and their successors is the ministry of the word: to preach, to forgive sins, and to offer the Eucharistic sacrifice. There are three levels to this ministry: the episcopacy, the priesthood and the diaconate. The lay faithful participate in the work of evangelization by virtue of their baptism, making them sharers in the three-fold mission of Christ as priest, prophet and king. They assist the Apostolic ministry by their mission in the secular world, engaging in both direct and relational evangelization – preaching of the Gospel directly, and building person-to-person relationships. Living a life of holiness is the key to all evangelization. Jesus challenges us to be holy and to go on mission, ever-mindful of the salvation of souls; for every person will die and stand before the judgement seat of Christ.
