\nthat adorn the refectory table
\nand the velvety jam
\ngingerly spread
\nover thick wedges.
\nQuaint English civility
\nthat masks what happens beneath.<\/p>\n
\nthere is no convivial conversation
\nover cigars and brandy by roaring fire,
\nthey return to their work
\ntheir continued encounter
\nwith His divine self.<\/p>\n
\nand the wind, whipped up, attempts
\nto penetrate the panes in windows
\nwhich rattle in their frames
\nand give rise to the feeling
\nthat this is a fortress
\nin the great battle beyond.<\/p>\n
\nare warriors for a world we rarely see
\nyet they dwell in for life.
\nEach worldly distraction,
\neach body afflicted with illness
\nor the fragility of mortality
\nis but a speck in the grand plan
\nof the eternity they bear witness to
\nand becomes nothing more
\nthan fodder for their prayers
\nwhich continue to rise
\nlike the obsidian winged companion
\nof their Holy founding father.<\/p>\n
\nwhich was kindled in the East
\nand built around it a school
\nthat we may too learn
\nhow to fan the embers
\nembedded in our souls
\nthat they may burst into flame
\nfor Him, who calls
\neach and every disciple
\nto be a monk in ordinary life
\nwith singularity of focus
\nto prefer nothing
\nto the love of Christ.<\/p>\n
