Truth is among the highest goods of human life. This is so obvious that almost everyone at least gives lip-service to truth. Few, however, engage in an honest pursuit of the truth, and even fewer do so without hypocrisy. Jesus Christ alone outlines the path of truth; for He is Truth in Person. It can, however, be difficult to communicate the truth of Christ to people. When following St. Paul Street Evangelization’s model for conversational evangelization (Listen, Befriend, Proclaim, Invite), some find it difficult to move from the Befriend to the Proclaim step. A valuable tool that addresses this difficulty is the “One Good Reason” method. One Good Reason is a conversational tool that helps bridge the gap. The evangelist asks if he can offer “one good reason” why he believes in Jesus, or in some other religious truth. In this way, One Good Reason combines compelling reasons for the faith with a form of personal testimony. It is also adaptable, and is useful to fall back on when feeling stuck in conversation. The method requires meaningful, truthful and compelling reasons that are suited to the conversation partner — and so preparing one’s “good reasons” is a great way to brush up on one’s own personal testimonies and apologetic skills.
